A symbol of unity

Minnesota has become the home to many Somali, Hmong, Oromo and other refugee populations since 1979. The United Nations established June 20 as World Refugee Day, and this year’s gathering marked the second year of celebration in the Twin Cities. Organizations all across the state worked together to put on a day-long event filled with cultural performances, great food and an immigrant resource fair. This year’s theme was a simple but powerful message: Refugee rights are human rights. I worked with the planning committee to make posters, graphics for handbills and a T-shirt for volunteers and event-goers. Over 1,500 people attended this year’s event.
