Experiencing the ‘Experience Paper’
The Star Tribune redesigned in 2005, just before I joined the staff as a news design intern in 2006. The thought process behind the rebuilding the paper as a daily experience was inspiring, and that summer shaped how I view both myself as a graphic designer and a visual journalist.
I was asked back (via a plea signed by 30 co-workers) for a second summer internship and eventually joined the staff full-time. I've spent time in pretty much every section, designing for the local inside pages and business fronts to special sections and Sunday A1. I pulled a double shift on the day of the I-35W bridge collapse, collaborated with editors and designed the Minnesota Sesquicentennial special pullout, and became an integral part of the design desk in my first year there.
